YOU NEED TO KNOW...

What Is Scoliosis?

The anatomy of the human spine is designed to be straight when looking at it from the front or back. When the spine shifts from the center to either side by 10 degrees or more, it is called scoliosis. Scoliosis creates stress on the nervous system and its proper functioning. It also causes heart and lung problems, severe physical deformity, chronic back pain, and osteoarthritis.

Scoliosis can occur at any age, but it often onsets in children, during the growth spurt just before puberty. Sometimes scoliosis is congenital; it is an abnormality present in the spine at birth. Other times it is caused by musculoskeletal dysfunction. But about 80 percent of scoliosis cases are idiopathic, meaning they have no specifically known cause.

We will conduct a free and thorough examination of your child to screen for scoliosis. If necessary, we will use orthopedic and neurological tests, nerve and muscle scans, and digital x-rays to determine the diagnosis and prognosis of any signs of scoliosis we find.

80% of patients that come in for a screening, don't realize that they have scoliosis.

Some Signs Of Scoliosis.

Pain is not a good indicator for scoliosis, as most children do not experience back pain; adults do. Here are a few signs to look for in your child:

  • uneven hips
  • uneven shoulders
  • uneven shoulder blades
  • the head and neck not centered together
  • one arm looks longer in a straight stance
  • one knee looks lower in a straight stance
  • muscle tightness on one side
  • muscle bulging on one side
  • a C or an S curve in the spine

We manage scoliosis by realigning the spine naturally. We have consistently seen abnormal curves straighten by more than a couple of degrees within a month. On the other hand, orthopedic surgeons specializing in the spine will monitor the curve, brace the curve, or correct the curve through a surgical procedure.
